I for example have a shuttle ST20G5 here which has an ATI chipset with ULi southbridge. That one is not supported with ide-DMA in current (upto 2.6.12) kernels, but copying and burning works ... only veeery slowly on my machine (running i386 -k7 kernel). Also make sure you don't use ide-scsi which is depricated in
